Arm-in-Arm

Social Media Campaign

Arm-In-Arm was a climate activist non-profit devoted to empowering marginalized communities who had been exploited by the energy industry in the South.

Southern Company is one of the largest utility companies in the United States. Arm-In-Arm sought to raise awareness about Southern Company’s role in environmental destruction, as well as local governments’ complicity in further exploiting the poor to enrich the powerful.

Noah Friedman Studio developed a character called “SoCo Slick” to graphically represent Southern Company and their extractive practices.

Each illustration typically acted as a portal into a topic of interest. For example, the Snake Oil-style ad to the left was a hero image for a story on the Kemper County Power Plant, a facility touted as the future of clean energy that financially collapsed and proved utterly ineffective in mitigating the effects of fossil fuel processing.
